Platforms also need to take into account the diversity of participants. A suitable avatar does not necessarily have to accurately imitate a real body, but it should offer many choices in appearance, movement, voice, and ways of communicating. People with disabilities, older people, or those who are uncomfortable with common forms of expression need to be able to participate without being treated as exceptions. Virtual spaces are truly open only when users can be present in ways that make them feel safe and respected.
In the future, digital identity may become a familiar layer of infrastructure, like email accounts or phone numbers today. People will use it to learn, work, transact, and maintain relationships across many different environments. But the value of an identity does not lie in how dazzling its avatar is or in the quantity of items it owns.
